videos, podcasts and more

Below is a selection of media for your viewing pleasure, featuring, well, yours truly.

kqed’s forum

I had a lifetime experience when I was asked to be apart of a panel discussion on NPR’s Forum radio show in San Francisco. I was even more smug to have been invited to chat about my work with the American Alpine Journal, and the women’s State of the Art Project.

As you’ll hear, the majority of the callers were young girls, eager to share their own excitement about rock climbing. It was a perfect testament to the progress towards creating space for women (and girls) voices in climbing media and story telling.

All along the watch tower

This video captures one of the best trips to the mountains I’ve ever had. I spent two weeks in the company of my dearest friend and climbing partner, Jenny, and our two friends Josh & Delano Lavigne. Josh & Del filmed our time on All Along the Watchtower on the Bugaboos North Howser tower, and what they produced, I think, is stunning and exceptionally unique. Bravo boys!

vargas girl

Vargas Girl is a hidden gem of Squamish. Often spoken about, seldom climbed. During the summer of 2018 with the help of a very supportive partner, I was able to dedicate several weeks of pre-work 6:00 am sessions to finally climb it. There’s something very satisfying about sending a project before work, then sliding in to your office in time for your first 9:00 am meeting. Ah, Squamish. What a place. This short video was shot by all-around multimedia specialist, Fernando Lessa.

The Open Road: Rock Solid

In the flesh, a real deal MEC video advertisement. MEC kindly filmed this with two of my good buddies, Julie McBride and Nick Elson (who happens to also be one of the most accomplished mountain runners in the country by the way).

mec envoy profile

Way back in 2012 when MEC first launched their athlete program, we were called, “Envoys”. I had the great fortune of not only pitching the athlete program idea to MEC’s then CEO, David Labistour, but also be offered the role as MEC’s very first athlete. It’s been a beautiful relationship ever since.

I’ll have what she’s having

My dear friend, Amber Gould, is the creative genius behind this new podcast series, I’ll Have What She’s Having. I was honoured to be among her first interviews for this project. Naturally, I cringe at listening to myself talk, but maybe there’s some good insights in to Sarah’s brain included amongst all the “ummms”, “ya’s” and “huh’s”.

melsays podcast

Mel Offner, creator the Melsays podcast series invited me to join her for this discussion. In Mel’s own words, “My guest for this episode is Sarah Leanne Hart. Sarah is a climber and she was MEC’s first ever ambassador, and still is to this day. She has traveled the world doing some epic climbs and is considered to be an “all-arounder”, climbing at an elite level, in different climbing disciplines. In addition to climbing, she also works as a facilitator for groups of women and girls. I had such a lovely time speaking with her at her home in Squamish a few weeks back, I hope you’ll enjoy our chat”.

MEC Ambassador profile

Here’s short profile video created by the MEC video team. Guest appearance by my good friend and long time climbing partner, Jamie Finlayson, on a fun adventure to climb the Mouses Tooth up the North Joffre Creek valley.

mec obsession hoodie

I was pretty stoked when MEC wanted to create a product video for the Obsession Hoodie while I was climbing on the classic Squamish off-width, Hypertension. I know this is really just a product video but it’s a great memory because it includes my very dear friend, Katy Holm, who at the time, was the alpine product line manage for MEC. We concepted this jacket together, then got to make a promo video about it, all while climbing an off-width. Cool!

how to be a rock climber

Maybe my single most important claim to fame. I made several appearances in this incredible video. I think it’s had something like 1 million views now?! Funniest part of it all, on the day of the shoot, the producers were explaining to me one of the segments that was to include an “alpine-ist”, as opposed to an “alpinist”. I laughed so hard at this mispronunciation that we just had to include it formally in the shoot. Watch through to the “alpine-ist” cameo. So good.
